Rebirth of Cool: The Return of the Black Hero or the death of negative imaging for the Black Folk

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Note: I write this now more than a year later because now is the right time. I believe many jumped the gun to make many of these points, most important of which is that he is not just a President, but a Black President whom White Folks hate but must listen to and do what he says. Yes America the most powerful man in America and the free world is a Black man. This could have jumped off several ways and I had to wait to be sure. I hate being incredibly wrong. Obama had to first prove me right. I mean he could have become President and claimed Hawaiian on that census. Nameen?

Now, he’s been President a little more than a year. He’s done an incredible job. Health Care? Done. Reviving the economy? Done. Stock Market hovering near 11,000. Banks payin’ off Billion dollar bailouts at a profit? Wow. Pulling the country from the brink of Armageddon? Wow? And now that it’s done I’m certain HIStory revisionists will do their best to minimize his role but it’s his watch, his government, his decisions. His honor and his accomplishments.

All of that said, Obama glory is not the reason for this post. What I want to point out is the change in the African American psyche. It was only a dream when he achieved it. But now that our children are watching this man lead this country. Watching him be successful. This is more than a man embodying our success. That’s too easy. And he certainly didn’t make racism disappear.

We as Black folk truly underestimate the power of subliminal suggestion despite all of the evidence to the contrary. Be like Mike, The white glove every where, screaming millions at concerts, the millions of our children sitting around watching sports and idolizing the players, the billions spent upon jerseys….

In the past this was usually the moment where I would point out how problematic this circumstance is for us as a people. However, this is no longer the case. Today the real hero changes the world. The man who has their hearts and minds is The Man Barak Obama. And this man who is The Man handles himself with grace and class in conflict with rich powerful White people. And wins. And they follow his orders.

Barak V. Superman

You can't possibly believe this fight isn't happening, right?

This is truly incredible. What this has done for us my loved ones is truly incredible. Suddenly all is possible within. It goes beyond Yes We Can and all the way to Yes I Can, to coin a phrase. All things are possible. And today our children can dig inside of themselves and find an image to battle the Super Hero Athlete or the the Super Hero Rock star in a way they couldn’t before. Make no mistake this is the rebirth of cool. Gone is anti life imaging required in the black hero of so much of our imagination, virtually over night. The legacy of Blacksploitation is gone overnight. Banished to the recesses of our collective conscious. Now we have a successful archetype devoid of anti-life values, devoid of thug culture. We my dear loved ones are at the top of the collective psyche  mountain. Right now. Today.

But this state is so short lived. Once he is gone. He is gone. And we’ve been down for so long. Would eight years be enough, would four years be enough to erase the generations long wander through the wrong of our sub conscious which we’ve thrown up at every turn, at every place, in every aspect of our life in America since we’ve allowed what’s inside of us the light of day?

Cooler than the other side of the pillow

We must capitalize. We must create and release every positive dream. We must ride the wave of positivity, nurture the truth within. Now. If we can build a foundation within our collective consciousness which is strong enough to withstand the inevitable coming darkness once Obama is no longer President, then perhaps thugs and hoes will die before they ever grip our kids again and perhaps that darkness will be part of our history and no more as Obama is certainly to become quite soon. We must build a culture of indomitable will and undying spirit within our young using this image and the real world success as an aide. As we prepare for his exit which will seem as meteoric as his arrival given the vaccum which must accompany it, we must build within us an understanding what our ancestors called an undeniable spiritual truth: None but God(are greater)

As I watch another series of Great White Male movies hit the screen and great white Athletic heroes hit the small screen every day, I am doing my part with my work are you?

John Mayer: Waitin’ on crackas to change or the truth about an Obama inspired Post Racial America

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Waitin’ for the world to change?

Nah, brah man how bout changin’ now?

I’m not stunned by this white male using that Nigger word, nor am I stunned by his racist potty mouth. Yes I read it right. I know I did cause I read it 5 times. He said my penis is a white supremacist.

Wow.

Here we have a sociopolitical art icon, damn near, who rode the success of a sociopolitical movement of apathy so common at the time right to major pop success. And when I call him a sociopolitical artist icon, I mean just that. A person made larger than life because of his art about the sociopolitical environment in America. What is so important about this is regardless of his status and wonderful lyrics of a song I never really liked because of its lyrics, this man is simply racist. And before I cover why he’s racist, let me say why I hate this song. This song is simply the quintessential statement of white political privilege. See the people gettin’ they aaaaaaassssssesssss kicked can not wait on the world to change. Usually black folks are gettin’ they asses kicked by the world…

Socially.

Politically.

Economically.

In front the cops, by the cops.

At the job. At the market. At the cleaners.

Whether they know it or not.

And at so many points in their lives, black folk have to make so many decisions to take on greater powers in their lives when believe me, they’d rather not, but their livelihoods or loved ones lives, or greater depend upon their fight on whatever level. See cause we can’t hide when it comes to racism.

Marked by the color of our skin we are forced to force change at so many crossroads since the original ancestor stepped foot in this country…. so difficult is this road that few choose to try to change what is so clearly wrong about the treatment of black people in this country. Even if a black person were to become political leader of this country that person would not try to change specifically the treatment of African Americans. That’s right Obama became President ostensibly by harnessing the social apathy Mayer confronted with his song and so prevalent under the republicans, but he has yet to directly confront clear racism in this country. And America, in every sound bite, and news cycle wants to follow suit as we hear more and more about a Post Racial America which is only media made fiction.

There has always been wealthy black folk since freedom done come. Didn’t stop the need for a Juneteenth. Didn’t stop lynchings. Has not stopped racism. And suddenly we’re supposed to believe racism’s done because a wealthy black male became President? When black folks are hit disproportionately by the recession. Still shot down like dogs in the street by the Po-po? Still gettin’ out(from under the)  jail after hell done froze over and the DNA hearing before the Appeals Court and Mama’s bout to be laid in the ground?

Now as I was sayin’ about Mayer’s racism…Yes he was being a cracka. And you know he’s not alone. Just the one dumb enough to say it. Right? And don’t look at me. He started it. Didn’t he wanna talk about his nigger card…called his penis a white supremacist…

We know about the historic treatment of the ancestors who were the first to hit these shores and endured the treatment as abused sex slaves for white supremacist Master Johnson’s all across the colonies. To call his penis a white supremacist and say he ain’t got a nigger hangout card all in one interview, I think summed up the historic racist slap of the year. Add to that his artistic political icon status and you have more than irony. You got…

Well America…

Truth is, if we were to tell the truth, Obama’s the President in America and if you want to say that this makes it a Post Racial America fine, but with all due respect, and with an incredibly ironic nod to the racist artistic icon of  political change John Mayer,  to a man or woman black folks all across America is waitin’ on crackas to change. Now that’s change we black people would really like to see yet the change we don’t believe in….
